Free-Wheeling Chaplain

FACT OR FICTION--Just how autobiographical is a work of fiction? The photo on this page is from the Korean Edition of the Stars and Stripes dated December, 17, 1956. Readers of The Book of Lights will recall that Rabbi Gershon had a jeep equipped with a distinctive set of tablets affixed to the front bumper.

The caption under the picture reads as follows:

CIRCUT RIDER--Jeep-riding Chaplain Herman H. Potok (left) traveled througout the Republic of Korea to conduct services during the eight-day Jewish Hannukkah holidays. The Bronx. N.Y. chaplain, who is with the 13th Eng. Bn., 7th Inf. Div., is the only Jewish chaplain in Korea. His driver is SP3 Jack L. Eisen, Joplin, Miss.

Photo supplied by Chaim Potok.
